Alexandra is a farming and holiday centre west of Lake Eildon and 130km from Melbourne. Named after Princess Alexandra, the Princess of Wales, it was the discovery of gold in 1866 which brought Alexandra - or - Redgate as it was originally known - into existence. The existence of the goldfields is long gone as Agriculture, timber, and horticulture have now become the leading industries of the area.

Tourism is playing an ever increasingly role as a leading force in the region. The town is the gateway to Lake Eildon National. A community market is held on the 3rd Saturday of the month and the town has a Timber and Tramway Museum in the former railway station.

Taggerty is centrally located to Alexandra, Marysville and Eildon. The township is dominated by the distinctive Cathedral Mountain with its wonderful State Park wildlife, walking trails and camp sites. Hemmed by the Blue Range to the east and the Black Range in the west, the Acheron Valley townships of Taggerty and Acheron are located between rolling hills and open pastures and boast a smorgasbord of interests and activities for the visitors.

There is always a river somewhere and the rivers and streams in the area provide great opportunities for trout and fly fishing, white water rafting, painting, relaxing days and lovely cool evenings.

Yarck, a little village about 17km north of Alexandra, is a popular rest stop on your way to Mansfield and Mt Buller. It has a Hume & Hovel historic marker and is charmed with historic buildings. There is a delightful antique store, a good old fashioned country pub and a general store that sells fuel and the best pies from here to Melbourne.
